Spider Stories follows the tale of Princess Zahara who is thrown into hiding after the royal family is overthrown by a corrupt neighboring kingdom. While traveling with a misfit caravan of merchants she meets a wandering drummer griot who introduces her to the spirit world. Armed with a mystical staff, the fearless princess embarks on quest to reconnect with the spirits, reunite her homeland, and reclaim the throne.
We are developing an 11 minute animated pilot for a fantasy adventure series called Spider Stories. Your pledges will go towards funding a team of animators to get it done at a professional level of quality.
Once completed we’ll be taking Spider on the road, pitching it to see if we can get it picked up with the goal of turning into a full fledged animated series.
Spider Stories is the product of a variety of influences. From Nigerian folk tales of the Tortoise and Anansi the Spider we heard growing up as children, to modern fantasy epics like Avatar: The Last Airbender, The Legend of Zelda, and Fire Emblem.

Co-creator Charles Agbaje writes:

This project was born both out of a love for the stories my brother and I heard growing up in a Nigerian household and also takes a lot of cues from great modern fantasy series like the Legend of Zelda, Lord of the Rings and especially Avatar The Last Airbender. In fact we may never have made this series were we not involved in the racebending movement that started around M. Night Shyamalan’s film. You can read that story here if you are interested.
In short we noticed that there is a gap in the fantasy genre. Great stories have been told in fantastical European and Asian worlds, but virtually never in African ones. This could go a long way towards changing the perceptions of blacks and Africans in the media and provide more heroes of color to kids and fans worldwide. It’s already resonating with a lot of people.
